Sunnylands Speaker Series: Prepare for an earthquake like an expert

STARTS AT 10/16/2017 2:00 pm

Dennis S. Mileti, Ph.D., an expert on earthquake and disaster preparedness, will return to the Rancho Mirage Library as part of the Sunnylands Speaker Series. Dr. Mileti's presentation will take you inside his desert home via video to demonstrate the precautions an "expert" has done to prepare for the "Big One." Mileti is the author of Disasters by Design, a groundbreaking book on managing hazards in the United States, and a former director of the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Taking these same precautions may be easier to accomplish than you might have ever imagined. Dr. Mileti will answer questions and help the audience with personalized preparedness ideas.
A downloadable workbook is provided so viewers can problem-solve and plan their own home strategy. Download the workbook here.

As there will be a limited number of workbooks available at the Library, it is recommended that you download a copy prior to the event and bring it with you. You may want to review the information and come with a list of concerns or questions you would like answered.

Dennis S. Mileti is professor emeritus at the University of Colorado Boulder and has been a resident of Rancho Mirage since 1999. He is author of over 100 publications. Mileti provided oversight of the U.S. Army Corps’ investigation of the societal impacts of the levee failures during Hurricane Katrina for which he was awarded the U.S. Army’s Civilian Medal of Honor. He designed and oversaw the study of evacuation of the World Trade Center on 9/11 for the U.S. Congress. He has chaired the Committee on Disasters in the National Research Council, and was a member of the Board of Visitors to FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute. Dr. Mileti has also served as a California Seismic Safety Commissioner.
