Social Media Blackout
As part of the International Baccalaureate curriculum offered at Cathedral City High School, two seniors have worked together to produce a community service project to focus on an issue they see affecting their local community and communities all over the world. In an effort to create awareness of the use of social media platforms, particularly those who use social media as a crutch in social situations, the students wish to encourage attendees to take a day away from their social media platforms to engage with the environment, friends, and family members. Sunnylands has chosen to host this event and welcomes visitors to engage in this student-designed community program.
- Student presentation in the theater—Join the students behind the program for a short presentation about their reasons for designing the Social Media Blackout program. Presentations will be 20 minutes long and take place at 11:30 am & 12:30 pm
- Toys on the Great Lawn
- Studio craft—Use craft materials and foam board to design your own “family quilt”
- Pop-up crafts and activities in the gardens—Wander the gardens and enjoy fun and thoughtful pop-up activities that encourage you to enjoy the space without social media.
- Social media information station—Learn some interesting facts about social media usage
World Tai Chi day celebration—Although separate from the social media blackout, tai chi is an excellent way for guests to detach from their devices and enjoy the gardens. This class will begin with a 30 minute demonstration of the full form by tai chi practitioners, and conclude with a free 30 minute introductory lesson available to the public.
