CV Days of Los Muertos: Special Friday Hours & Programming

Past Event

Sunnylands will stay open until 9 pm for special evening activities.

1 pm-6 pm: Drop-in Workshop

Families are invited to participate in a drop-in workshop to create miniature nichos and tin foil sculptures.

Nichos are traditional folk art of small shrines that honor and celebrate a loved one who has passed. Families are encouraged to bring small items of their own to represent the loved one being remembered.

Tin foil sculptures will be available to decorate as recognizable Day of the Dead symbols, including the Catrín(a) (dapper skeleton) or alebrije (protective Mexican mythical creatures). The sculptures can be used in your miniature nicho or kept separately as a sculpture.

A variety of materials for these crafts will be provided at no cost. No reservations are required. Free for all participants.

5:30 pm-9 pm: Nighttime viewing of the ofrendas

Guests are invited to view the ofrendas and nichos around the West Gardens at night. Flashlights are recommended for evening viewing.

6:30 pm-8:30 pm: Film in the Gardens

Pixar’s Coco (2017) will be screened in the West Gardens. Rated PG. Runtime 1 hour 45 minutes. For more information, click here.
