Art Workshop: Calaveras for Day of the Dead

Past Event

Calaveras (which means skulls in Spanish) are some of the most recognizable cultural and artistic elements of Day of the Dead celebrations. These colorful skulls are traditionally placed in altars and used to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased in joyful and humorous ways.

In this workshop, participants will learn about the traditional iconography of the calavera and decorate a ceramic skull that will go on display at the Sunnylands gardens from Wednesday, October 30, through Sunday, November 3, 2019, during our Day of the Dead celebration. Participants will be able to pick up their skulls to take home beginning Wednesday, November 6.

All materials will be provided, but participants may bring additional embellishments to personalize their skulls.
This workshop does include paint. Participants should consider wearing paint-friendly attire. No previous art experience necessary. Participants must be 18 years or older.

Space is limited. Reservations are required.
Unregistered guests may not attend.

Fee: $25.00 per person
