The Senate version of a reauthorization bill for the Department of Homeland Security is likely to simplify the agency’s “rat’s nest” of congressional reporting requirements, according to a report on Nextgov.com, a website covering government and technology.

U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, is pushing a rewrite of the House version of the bill to reduce the number of congressional bodies with oversight of DHS, according to the report published Feb. 28, 2018.

The move is consistent with the recommendations of a September 2013 task force report issued by The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands and the Aspen Institute Justice and Society Program. Rep. Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, has also decried the “illogical overlap of jurisdiction” over the department.
