Ken Chavez

Ken Chavez joined the Sunnylands Department of Communications and Public Affairs in 2014 after working as a newspaper reporter and editor for nearly 30 years.

He launched his career through the Los Angeles Times’ METPRO (Minority Editorial Training Program) in 1986 after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in communication from Stanford University.  He then went on to reporting positions at Greenwich Time in Greenwich, Connecticut, and The Sacramento Bee in Sacramento, California.

In his 25 years at The Bee, Ken served in a variety of roles, covering general assignment, state and local government, national politics, and health and business news.  He became an editor in 1997 and helped move the paper into the digital era after being named its first assistant managing editor for interactive media in 2005.  Ken left the paper as the senior editor in charge of metropolitan coverage, overseeing a staff of roughly 40 reporters and editors.

A Southern California native, Ken plays softball and tennis recreationally and now lives in Palm Springs with his husband, Randy Bissett.
