Films on the Great Lawn showcases fairytale adventure films in May

Sunnylands’ popular Films on the Great Lawn resumes in May with three classic fairy tale adventure films of the 1980s.

Admission to the outdoor movies, with an introduction by the Palm Springs International Film Festival, is free.

Shown on three consecutive Friday evenings, the movies are:

• May 4: The Princess Bride – The enduring 1987 motion picture directed by Rob Reiner is a romantic comedy starring Cary Elwes as a farmhand who goes on an epic adventure to rescue his true love, Princess Buttercup, played by Robin Wright.

• May 11: Labyrinth – A British-American musical that debuted in 1986, the film stars Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly in one of her earliest roles as a teen who must rescue her brother from a labyrinth. Rocker David Bowie portrays the Goblin King.

• May 18: The NeverEnding Story – The 1984 fantasy film tells the story of Bastion, a boy who dives into a bookstore to avoid bullies and discovers a mysterious book.

All movies start at 8 p.m. at Sunnylands Center & Gardens, 37977 Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. Filmgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and small picnics. Large coolers, alcohol, smoking, and pets are not permitted. Carpooling is advised.
