Family Day: In the Gardens

Sunnylands is hosting a fun-filled Family Day celebrating the wondrous native ecosystems of the Coachella Valley desert. Toys and games, arts and crafts, guided bird walks, and interactive stations will be found throughout the Center & Gardens from 9:30 am to 2 pm. Free for all to enjoy. Reservations not required.

  • Free hourlong guided bird walks at 9:30 and 11 am with knowledgeable birders (binoculars recommended)
  • Meet some friendly red wiggler worms and play fun games with folks from Desert Compost and learn how you can make a measurable impact on reversing climate change using the power of kitchen scraps.
  • Stop by the insect and reptile exploration stations for a multi-sensory experience.
  • Wing it at the S.C.R.A.P. Gallery station and craft your own hummingbird using recycled materials.
  • Create a mini take-home ecosystem guided by students from Cathedral City High School's IB-CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) program.
  • Join artist Zach Fleming Boyles in creating a mural inspired by the colors and shapes of the desert.
  • Stop by the insect and reptile exploration stations for a multi-sensory experience.
  • Chat with representatives from University of California, Riverside, Master Gardeners and Desert Horticultural Society of the Coachella Valley
  • Toys and activities will be spread around the Great Lawn
  • Guests are encouraged to explore the gardens at their own pace using the new Gardens Guide or downloading the self-guided audio walks.
  • Books and games will be available inside the Center.
  • *A special community drumming circle ceremony at 9:30 am with Circulo Azteca Citlaltonac (*Please note, the drumming ceremony has been canceled. All other activities will continue as scheduled.)

Parking and Family Day activities are free of charge and available to guests of all ages. Visitors are encouraged to dress for warm weather, bring sun protection, and stay hydrated for a fun and safe family outing.
