Family Day: Sculpture

Past Event

Celebrate the art of sculpture with hands on activities and programs for all ages. Activities include sculpture demonstrations by local artists, toys and games in the gardens, and an artist-led drop-in sculpture workshop.

And, get a rare opportunity to enter the grounds of the historic Annenberg estate for free to see the spectacular bronze column that inspired Sunnylands’ newest art exhibition, Carved Narrative: Los Hermanos Chávez Morado. The column is adorned with carved relief symbols that tell the story of Mexico, from its pre-Hispanic past to the 20th century. (Entry into the house will not be permitted. Guests must be at least 10 years old.)

Create a mini column inspired by the work of José and Tomás Chávez Morado, whose art is on view at Sunnylands in the exhibition Carved Narrative: Los Hermanos Chávez Morado. Workshop led by guest artist Stefania Ford. Ford is a sculpture artist who works primarily in clay, referencing topics of life and birth. She has been an instructor at the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program and Old Town Artisan Studio.

Meet sculptors in the gardens and see them work:
Eric Banas – Mixed media artist living in Joshua Tree, CA. His love for the environment and natural surroundings forge integrity in the use of reclaimed materials. Eric enjoys creative expression through the use of recycled materials, in his metal sculpting, welding, woodworking, and painting.

Victor Picou – His sculptures, inspired by the classic works of Pablo Picasso and Auguste Rodin, integrate abstract or figurative aspects with his love of nature and the human gesture.

Guillermo Valentín – Sculptor that creates works in marble, wood, bronze, stone, terracotta, cast stone, and paper. He believes that beauty resides in nature and his goal is to create a representation of movement, harmony of lines and a continuous celebration of beauty.

Dentawa Manoi – Primarily a wood sculptor, he also watercolors, sketches, creates comics, cartoons and storyboards, and sculpts in a variety of other mediums.

Ismael Jessie Rodriguez – Artist with 40 years of experience in bronze casting. Known for his pastels, acrylic paintings, color pencil drawings and bronze sculptures of wildlife, his works are collected throughout the United States and abroad.

Roxana Casillas – Sculptor that specialized in marble sculpture after living and working in Pietrasanta, Italy. She now works in wood, bronze, clay, and resins, sometimes all mixed together in one piece.
