Sunnylands invites families to a special Family Day celebrating this year’s exhibition, Curating Canopy: Trees at Sunnylands. Guided by local artists, families and guests will have the opportunity to explore their creativity through nature and the trees found on the Sunnylands estate.
Sunday, February 15, 9 am to 2 pm.
The following activities will be available in the West Gardens:
- Guided bird walks with expert birder Kurt Leuschner at 10 am and 12 pm. The one-hour walks introduce guests to the many local migratory bird species in the Sunnylands Gardens.
- Participation in a collaborative cardboard Aleppo pine tree sculpture with the S.C.R.A.P. Gallery.
- Creating Epsom salt bath mixtures with it refills using eucalyptus and grapefruit essential oils inspired by Sunnylands trees.
- Writing “Treemendous Rhymes” with PoertyKeepers
- Palma Correcaminos Activity: Use origami-like techniques with Carlos Camacho to transform a palm tree frond into a roadrunner. This activity transforms two strands of a Mexican palm tree frond into the representation of a correcaminos (roadrunner) through origami-like figure-making and weaving skills.
- Create a nature mandala ornament using handpicked material from Sunnylands trees with Julia Briest Art
- Learn to count rings on a real tree slice to solve mysteries of the past with SteamRocket inc
- Join Isaac Vargas to create canopy-themed lino prints on a canvas totes
- Wood art display demonstration with Desert Dude Woodworks
- Color in prints on wood rounds cut from eucalyptus, mesquite, and olive trees found on the Sunnylands estate. Located in the studio in the Center
