CV Days of Los Muertos—special Friday programming

Past Event

On this special day of events, Sunnylands will be open until 9 pm with family-friendly programming in celebration of the Day of the Dead.

Pop-up craft tables (8:30 am to 9 pm):

  • Pop-up craft tables are spread throughout the gardens. Crafts include monarch butterfly cut-outs that guests can color to decorate the gardens and skull masks that guests can decorate and wear as they explore.
  • “Before I die…” activity—guests can participate in a community display by completing the sentence, “Before I die…” and expressing their wishes for the future on colorful strips of paper.

Studio drop-in workshop (3 pm to 7 pm):
Families are invited to participate in a drop-in workshop to create paper marigolds. These flowers—also called cempasuchitl, or flower of the dead—commonly adorn graves and altars during Day of the Dead celebrations. According to tradition, the flower’s vibrant petals and strong aroma help guide the spirits to their altars. Families will be invited to create an adaptation of these flowers that they can wear on their wrists. No reservations are required for this workshop.

Film (6:30 pm to 8:30 pm):
Film screening of Coco (2017) on the Great Lawn.

Altars will be on display in the gardens 8:30 am to 4 pm, October 30 through November 3.
