Art Workshop: Botanical Illustration in a Desert Garden

Learn how to observe and document plants like the botanist-explorers of centuries ago. On April 4, from 9:30 to 11:30 am, participants will receive a specimen with which to document, sketch, and capture nature’s colors. Participants will go home with a plant study and instructions to use on their next sketching trip to Sunnylands. This workshop takes place outdoors. Adequate sun protection and water are recommended.

Materials:

  • 9″ x 12″ sketchbook
  • Drawing pencils*
  • Colored pencils*
    *Additional drawing pencils and colored pencils will also be available during class.

Instructor:
Tania Marien has encouraged an interest in plants through art, science, and interpretation since 2002. For 16 years, she served as full-time editor and educator at ArtPlantae, a resource she founded for artists, naturalists, and educators. Tania has introduced the public to plants and botanical art at environmental education events, botanical gardens, museums, STEM events, and a national park. Currently, she hosts conversations with independent educators working in natural resource fields and environmental education on the podcast, Talaterra.
