Ambassador Paul Myler commenced as Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy in Washington, DC, in June 2021. In his previous position of Minister-Counsellor (Political), also in Washington DC, he drove Australian engagement with the United States on global geopolitics, strategic developments in the Indo-Pacific and bilateral relations.

Prior to this, Ambassador Myler was Assistant Secretary, North East Asia with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), responsible for Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This followed three years as Assistant Secretary, India and Indian Ocean, spearheading efforts to increase strategic and defense cooperation, diversify Australia’s economy and generate a more robust Indian Ocean regional architecture.

From 2013 to 2015, Ambassador Myler was Australia’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation and the countries of Central Asia. His tenure commenced with close collaboration on Russia and Australia’s respective G20 host years.

Ambassador Myler’s other roles in DFAT include Assistant Secretary, Strategic Issues and Intelligence, contributing to Australia’s 2016 Defence White Paper and Cybersecurity Strategy and Assistant Secretary, Northern, Southern and Eastern Europe, managing bilateral relations with 38 European countries. From 2003 to 2005, he was Senior Counsel for the Australia-U.S. Free Trade Agreement negotiations. He led Australia’s services trade and investment negotiations at the World Trade Organization in Geneva from 2005 to 2008.
